Learn about NASA’s PUNCH program, along with past and modern perspectives of astronomy at Jemez Historic Site during two programs held on Saturday, September 20, 2025.

What: At 11:00 a.m., Jim Greenhouse, from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque, will share images and discuss details of the NASA PUNCH (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere) mission during the “Looking to the Skies: Modern and Ancient Astronomers” program. He will share images and offer visitors a chance to view the sun using a solar telescope. At 8:00 p.m., visitors can spend an evening under the stars with Greenhouse, as well as with The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS) for “Stargazing at Gisewa.” Greenhouse will give a presentation in the museum about the stars and other celestial objects while TAAS volunteers will be set up throughout the site with telescopes for nighttime sky viewing. Pueblo food and art vendors will be selling their goods at the event.

Why: These family-friendly weekend activities teach visitors about astronomy through contemporary and Indigenous perspectives while offering an opportunity to view the sun, stars, and constellations. Looking to the Skies is included with admission of $7. Star Gazing at Jemez is $10 for adults. Purchase tickets online. Both programs are free to children 16 years and younger, people with Native/Tribal affiliations, NM disabled veterans, NM foster families, Friends of Coronado & Jemez members, and MNMF members.
